I do it up then down-left then right
2026-09-02 07:28

I'm not a flag-fourther, but I'm not an open-square-fourther either. My 4s start at the top and go down to the left diagonally until about halfway through the digit, then horizontally to the right (ideally with a slight upwards curvature, like a smile, to ease the pen motion), and then vertically down again, all in a single stroke. Am I the weird one?
2026-09-02 07:25

Literally the last one you said, I thought you'd miss it entirely lol
2026-09-02 07:16

I kinda draw it like phy
But mines doesnt connect the l to the top of the /
2026-09-02 07:03

I just do like a

2026-09-02 06:44

What about the _other_ kind of 4 that looks ... um... well, like that: 4, but instead of the vertical line going all the way up to the diagonal line it's a small line, so it looks like a / with a +?
2026-09-02 06:25

Using more than one stroke per number is strange. Then again, I write in cursive and cross my x as well as t.
2026-09-02 06:12

I don’t do the diagonal line thing but I think it’d be funny to see an attempt that draws from the midpoint of the plus four separate times, then adds the slash.
2026-09-02 06:11

Normal sevens are also acute
2026-09-02 06:10

I do the flag pole first by going up and then I finish the flag part. It's all in one penstroke and there's not enough time in the budget to make it look better
2026-09-02 05:58

Just don't do flag four.
2026-09-02 05:53

I just do it from the bottom like the first method
2026-09-02 05:31

Lol it feels like you just refused to do the 4 in the way I do it. I usually draw it starting from the rightmost point and then just go ⬅️↗️⬇️ all in one stroke.
The only drawback is that some people might look at my 4s and assume they are 9s if I draw them sloppy, but the same people would also assume my sloppy 9s would look like 4s.
2026-09-02 05:23

start from top, down left, right, raise pen, middle downstroke.. Note: I am lefty.
It's always been my most comfy way of doing it.
2026-09-02 05:10

All in one motion from the bottom. The line across has to be flat or it looks atrocious to me
2026-09-02 04:37

Start at the bottom, go up, go down to the left diagonally, then finish the line by going right
2026-09-02 04:33

I go on the far right and the. Jusg follow the line from there
2026-09-02 04:11

In 3rd grade I wrote my 4 like this on the board and the teacher told the class "the 4 looks a little different because this is how you write 4s in Europe" idk why
2026-09-02 03:16

I love that single 3 in the mix.
2026-09-02 02:29

⬆️↙️➡️
2026-09-02 02:29

If you are writing your Flag-Four with two strokes, You have defeated the purpose of the Flag-Four. You had it right the first time - Up, Southwest, Right. Mine tend to have a slant to them, Due to the direction the right hand rotates. They are never pointing STRAIGHT up.
It is a 9 that is round. I start 9's from the bottom, Though I recognize that may be uncommon.
2026-09-02 02:14

The triangle first, then the vertical bar
2026-09-02 01:34

I write my 2s with a loop and 4s like that. I think I start from the bottom.
I have messy handwriting, and I do alot of math in my field, I just need to write numbers asap, and this feels natural.
I also write my 1s with a kink at the top to distinguish from an I and my 7s with a cross dash to distinguish from a 1. I write my 6s in one motion and my 9s as a circle then a line.
I cross my 0s to distinguish from an O, and I cross from top right to bottom left to distinguish from the greek letter ø(phi).
2026-09-02 01:12

There are different ways of writing other numbers.
2026-09-02 01:08

Start at the bottom
2026-09-02 01:03

Not a flag 4 but when I went to draw a flag for I did the outer angle and then the line. Granted that’s how I draw my 4’s now just without the steep angle. So dunno
2026-09-02 00:58

im dying to know why is there a 3 up there

2026-09-02 00:13

Yeah I write it exactly like you thought I did
2026-09-02 00:11

From below
2026-09-02 00:00

I do it like how you thoughy
2026-09-02 00:00

Neither?
2026-09-01 23:54

The 2nd one. Draw the triangle and then the vertical line, joined to the top of the triangle and crossing the horizontal line
2026-09-01 23:51

I just use both 4's with inconsistent ways of writing.
2026-09-01 23:49

Personally, I start at the bottom going up they way you originally imagined it, but I’m not confident that this is considered “correct” in the classic 4 community.
2026-09-01 23:45

I do the flagpole but i seperate the top
2026-09-01 23:44

Yeah I don't like the flag pole 4 because when hand writing it looks a lot like a 9 most the time.
2026-09-01 23:39

Weird how flagpole 4 is normal in text but looks weird in writing
2026-09-01 23:29

triangle first then line?
2026-09-01 23:29

I write my fours the way you do, but if I did it the other way, I'd go horizontal line, diagonal line, vertical line; all one stroke no lifting the pen
2026-09-01 23:25

What I do is I draw the pole top to bottom, then draw the flag diagonal first
2026-09-01 23:22

This is a top priority. Oh, like this - 4 -
2026-09-01 23:18

I start from the horizontal line but at the right part first, people do one stroke from the bottom but i do it in reverse
⬅️↗️⬇️
2026-09-01 23:12

Lowest effort possible, first one you did, don't lift up the utensil.
2026-09-01 22:57

One stroke, horizontal line from right to left first then top then bottom
2026-09-01 22:51

As a person who writes the flag four I write it the first way
2026-09-01 22:50

It pains me how many fours here were written with the backwards form.
2026-09-01 22:35

I do the upper flag part first from like the diagnal to than the horizontal in one motion and then I do the Pole from top to bottom
2026-09-01 22:30

HOW do you not guess the opposite way as the first one that you showed. You start from the right, draw the horizontal line, and then just finish the shape.
ONE single flow without lifting your pen.
It's super easy.
Btw, I actually draw 4 in both ways, either like I mentioned above or the way you do it.
2026-09-01 22:29

I used write 4's like that but my writing evolved to be like indistinguishable from my 9's lol
I wrote it from the base then the sw-e part
2026-09-01 22:10

i've always been a ⬅️↗️⬇️ and it looks bad ??
2026-09-01 22:09

Personally I begin with that little bit and follow through the rest of the four, I needed to start writing my fours like that because the better looking one started to look more and more like a nine due to my sloppy handwriting. I also put a line through my sevens and zeros
2026-09-01 22:00

Diagonal down first. Then horizontal left to right. Finall verically down. Sometimes, if the diagonal is too steep, it doesn't meet the vertical and it looks a bit like yours.
2026-09-01 21:57

I write it exactly backwards from the first way you did it. Left, up-right, then down.
2026-09-01 21:55

One stroke. Horizontal right to left, diagonal up, straight down. The one method you didn't do.
2026-09-01 21:55

Same as you but in the opposite direction
2026-09-01 21:52

i do the triangle first and then a lign down
2026-09-01 21:39

Start from the bottom, up, down left, right
2026-09-01 21:29

There are real people who use the flagpole method???
2026-09-01 21:28

I know someone who does acute 7 + horizontal
2026-09-01 21:27

I just do ⬅️↗️⬇️
2026-09-01 21:27

yeah i write it starting from the bottom
the diagonal sometimes is too fast and it looks similar to a 9, but it’s fine usually
i write a 9 from the top down, so there’s usually an extra part of a line near the top compared to the 4
2026-09-01 21:23

i leave out the sticky outy bit on the right side
lets give numbers to each vertex
1 is the top
2 is the left
3 is the centre
4 is the bottom
i go 1-2-3-1-4 without lifting my pen, which does mean i overlap a line
i honestly dont know why i do it like that and looking at it now, it seems pretty unorthodox.
2026-09-01 21:23

⬅️↗️⬇️
2026-09-01 21:21

I do the triangle then pole, mine has the extended line/tail at the mid one
2026-09-01 21:21

Step 1: ↗️
Step 2: ⬇️
Step 3: ⬇️
Step 4: ➡️
2026-09-01 21:14

Ah, I write both styes of four, and the flag pole style I write three different ways, but usually do the L shape and then the vertical line.
2026-09-01 21:11

I go right to left
2026-09-01 21:09

Well I do ⬅️↗️⬇️
2026-09-01 21:08

Yeah bro do the triangle first you just wrote a flag four!
2026-09-01 21:08

Yh I write it like that, but also 1, I, and l are all just a line and 7 and Z have lines in the middle?
2026-09-01 21:02

Im left handed so its easier for me to start from the right and just use one stroke
2026-09-01 21:02

Post first from top to bottom then go right center to left then up to the right
2026-09-01 20:52

Old fashion Italian: Ⅳ ?
2026-09-01 20:43

I write my fours like you, but in one stroke like an upside down h
2026-09-01 20:43

Yes. I also crossbar my 7s and 0s
2026-09-01 20:43

I start with the little line line on the pole then go around making the flag then pole last
2026-09-01 20:36

I do it like 4
2026-09-01 20:35

I start at the top and make the diagonal line with the horizontal line besides it in a single movement. And then I complete the four with the vertical line.
2026-09-01 20:31

i do it that one way you showed it in the video
2026-09-01 20:29

The Rightmost line
2026-09-01 20:23

I do the first one you showed, going from the bottom of the pole and into the flag, I prefer it since it lets me write the entire 4 without lifting my pencil off the paper, just like every other digit
Edit: ...except for 7, because I'm used to writing my 1s with a post, I write my 7 with a longer post and a cross to distinguish them
2026-09-01 20:04

I see at the top you are looking at other fours. one of them looks like arabic/urdu script
2026-09-01 19:59

I draw it like your four but angle it. so < first then |
edit : mine would be the sloppy cross
2026-09-01 19:58

I fo the same as you (the only correct awnser and you should he burned to the stake if you do it any other way but not really you can draw fours however you want but still) except the bent side crosses through the vertices line
2026-09-01 19:51

pole then flag, i've never even thought about how i wrote numbers until now
2026-09-01 19:51

I usually go opposite of your first example - starting at the right and going left in order to have a reasonable width for writing
2026-09-01 19:47

depends on countries as well
2026-09-01 19:43

You could also start with the middle tail and draw the first line horizontally right-to-left. Not sure why you wouldn't consider that.
2026-09-01 19:29

From right with a continuous motion
2026-09-01 19:27

Oddly enough, I used to write my 4’s like that, using one line, but I don’t remember which end I started with.
2026-09-01 19:26

I write the true 4 (vertical bars not touching) but my guess would be they write it the same but slanted so trangle first, then vertical pole
2026-09-01 19:26

I dont do the flag 4 but i do the pole first, and then the L
2026-09-01 19:19

I do this lol I do method 1 xd
2026-09-01 19:01

normally I do the triangle and then bring the flagpole down
2026-09-01 18:55

Please no one panic, but I do it without lifting the pen :) and I start from the top of the triangle retracing some parts as necessary lol
2026-09-01 18:46

I write an open triangle, if that makes sense? i.e. I start at the top, 45 degree angle down left, straight to the right and cross out the horizontal line with a vertical line in the middle, which usually doesn't exactly close the triangle, but is close enough.
It's much easier to aim for a down stroke in the middle than exactly at the end of a line which makes quick writing easier.
2026-09-03 05:21

"You are a disgrace to the entire art community, and the entire world would rejoice, if you never touch that piece of paper again EVER!" some unknown probably
2026-09-03 03:12

I start right to left with the horizontal, then create the rest of th flag and pole w/o picking up my pencil/pen :3
2026-09-03 01:17

Down up bottom left left
2026-09-03 00:14

You're missing out on the potential of the curved diagonal that doesn't quite connect with the post. More stylized than the boxy four, more open than the flag 4. The Goblet Four
2026-09-02 21:21

Im suprised noone in the comments dies it like me , I come from the top down then come back up to the top of the line and go down diagonally and cross it through , i always lose marks to misreading my own and a 9 though...
2026-09-02 21:17

I do it like the first one you showed. Feels natural to me cause thats whay Ive been doing all my life, the upside being I dont need to lift the pen off the paper
2026-09-02 19:17

I do the 4 in one continuous stroke: start top, go down left, round back horizontal right, slash down a little tail
It looks like a rounded flag with the top of the pole missing
2026-09-02 18:47

excuse me, "acute 7"? that's a 1
2026-09-02 18:46

Idk what the nickname for the open four is but i write it the same way

The easiest way is the way that is just comfortable to you. Everyone writes a little differently, hence why handwriting can vary so much. The way i do is the same as the "normal" 4 but doing a diagonal line instead of a straight to get the "flag."
2026-09-02 16:00

⬆️↙️➡️
2026-09-02 15:36

did you never consider starting from the right point
2026-09-02 15:32

Flag first then post, same as the other style but the top intersects
2026-09-02 15:00

I prefer any method that does it all in one motion, every number can be done without picking up your pen/pencil so breaking that to do the 2 stroke 4 bothers me
2026-09-02 14:00

I used to be a flag 4 person I always did it in one stroke and I dor the horizontal line first
like:
left, diagnal right up, down
if that makes sense
the horizontal line always over-extended the vertical line and the slope always had an inward bend like a closed bracket )
2026-09-02 13:43

The first flag pole 4 method you showed
2026-09-02 13:39

Firget the flag 4, people who glue ↄ and c together instead of drawing an x really scare me.
2026-09-02 12:56

I do a u then a flagpole down
2026-09-02 12:52

You've gotta use a diagonal line up and right to start, gives it ✨ class ✨
2026-09-02 11:06

With my left index finger, 2 rows up.
2026-09-02 10:39

i write it like how you did at the beginning lol
2026-09-02 10:33

I do the post then the flag
2026-09-02 10:21

I sometimes write my 8s with two circles, but I sometimes do the lemniscate-style version with a single stroke. I don't know why
2026-09-02 10:15

I was raised a flag 4 person and I did it the way you don't like, but I switched to open 4 after college after long realizing that I always drew them like shit, and the open 4 is easier to distinguish even when it's drawn poorly.
I also switched from unbarred 7's to barred 7's for a similar reason.
2026-09-02 09:49

One stroke from the line extending to the right side of the triangle to the left, diagonally up to the right, and then down
2026-09-02 09:19

2026-09-03 19:02

nah i do the way u did it at the start

I use yours lmao I like it more
2026-09-03 12:43

personally i am a triangle first then post
2026-09-03 12:32

start in the middle, do not lift pen, do not double back, do not pass go
2026-09-03 11:58

Start from the right, then move left, up diagonally right, then down.
2026-09-03 11:57

Post, then flag. Top-down.
2026-09-03 09:52

I used to do up, down left, and right in one motion but I’m working on doing your methods lol
2026-09-04 08:23

Closed "flagpole" 4 can easily look like 9 if you are sloppy with it.
2026-09-04 08:08

Its the first one ok
2026-09-04 06:45

up -> diagnal down left -> right
2026-09-04 04:52

As a flag 4 person, I do it the same way you do your 4, just with the diagonal. Start at the top, go left-down, then go right. Pick up the pen, go to the top, and do the vertical line.
2026-09-04 03:22

Im bad with writing curves so sharp angles are quicker for me since its easier to make a line
I do the fantastic 4 method (starting from the bottom)
2026-09-04 01:09

i do the first one you showed
2026-09-04 00:13

I get used to slant line first, horizontal line second, then vertical line last. All in about six hundred milliseconds.
2026-09-03 21:35

flag looks too much like seven with line in it which i use
2026-09-03 21:29

... Slow is smooth and smooth is fast
2026-09-03 21:21

I carefully draw each individual point on the shape. After just an infinite number of steps, I have a perfect 4.
2026-09-04 20:44

I do my fours the first way you did it (starting from the bottom and doing a continuous line), but all my numbers are the odd versions; strikes through sevens and zeros, stuff like that.
2026-09-04 15:31

I separate my lines instead of connecting them typically, so my 4 is a big half triangle going down, and then a small vertical line at the bottom that crosses it.
2026-09-04 12:12

One stroke: ⬅️↗️⬇️
2026-09-04 12:09

4's go ↙️ ➡️ ⬇️

I do the flag 4 but reversed from how you did it. I start from the back.
2026-09-05 11:30
