I've been using LibreOffice for about a decade now. It's very good and I love it. I will always prefer "No AI" and "Anti-AI" over the alternative. Keep the clanker corpo trash out. I'll only accept AI if it's entirely individual and mine, untouchable by corporate filth.

The companies behind AI have treated privacy as a commodity, and security as an afterthought. It’s not surprising people might want a good, clean office suite without the exposure. Not only that, but people are weary of the constant push from Microsoft and others to shoehorn this extra unrequested feature into everything. I don’t need my Notepad summarised, and I doubt the “AI” in my washing machine is anything more than a workflow.

I can't WAIT for the A"I" hype train to crash and burn. LLMs can have some uses, but only when quality-checked by someone who knows their subject already.

But A"I"'s portrayal as 1) a magical shortcut to reliable knowledge for novices, 2) a must-have feature in products and software with no damn need for it, and/or 3) a sure-fire way to slash payroll by eliminating human workers ... all of that needs to go.

I've also switched to LibreOffice. It's not as smooth as Office 365 and there's a learning curve to find the right formatting settings, but those are just minor bumps in the process to remove Microslop's spyware

I feel like there should be a market for ai-free word processors, IDEs and the like, promoted to colleges and universities for their students to use. Of course schools are all in the pockets of Google and Microsoft so it won't happen, but still, if they don't want students using AI, you would think they would be interested in providing students with tools that don't come with it baked in

Libre office is so good. You can modify keyboard shortcuts how you want and choose the background and page color to your liking so to make a good dark (or light) mode

The 1 million doesn't include it being pre-installed on Linux. The downloads are the number on Windows and Mac and I would rather support open source software including the operating system which I have done on my laptop.

I love FOSS companies making some smart marketing moves every once in a while.
Maybe it's not 100% correct calling it _marketing_ since they don't sell their products, instead providing them for free, but the more people adopt FOSS alternatives, the better it is.
More users = more pissible voluntary donations but, most importantly, shifting the market towards free software adoption, instead of proprietary, closed source and DRM infected slop. If hardware vendors and mainstream software considered FOSS more, it would mean less hurdles in the developing of said software, so better functionality and more drive for the biggest and more influential chunk of the market towards free as in freedom things, instead of negatively impacting all users, even those who choose products they are in control of as much as they can.

I do like Libreoffice and this feature is nice, but I think it should be noted that the most recent version suddenly getting 1 million downloads might just be people updating automatically to the newest version. I'm glad it's doing well, but I just doubt that all the sudden a million new people downloaded it.

I installed Linux to avoid AI, then I discovered ollama and have been experimenting with AI more than I ever have. I guess it's just the way of the future, but yes, I also prefer to have a say in when and where AI is implemented in my work flow.

I would love it if every app provided the option to turn off AI. It’s there by default almost everywhere now. To get it out of my life, I would have to replace dozens of programs, if I could even find alternatives that had no AI, or an option to turn it off. I hate it.

AI features are not for us end users. AI features are shoved in every product to signal to their investors that they are also in on this massive speculative trend and they can make a lot of money together. It's about valuation of their company, and not at all about the functionality of the product

I've been using LibreOffice exclusively for a couple of years now -- as a backup in a pinch in other situations prior to that -- and I have to say, I prefer it to Microsoft Office. Especially as something of a power user. It's not flashy, but it's powerful, and it's a lot easier for me to do what I want to do in LibreOffice than having to dig through all the different panels and tabs and windows just to get to the one setting I need in MS Office. I used to be able to use MS Office the same way, but they've made it so "modern" that it's just a waste of time.
