This tiny soft robot doesn’t need a motor to keep jumping. It uses infrared light to power its movement.
When the infrared light hits the liquid crystal elastomer ribbon, the material contracts and begins twisting. The V-shaped aluminum part stops it from simply rolling, so the twist keeps storing elastic energy. Once enough energy builds up, the V-shaped part snaps against the ground and launches the robot into the air.
The clever part is what happens next: after the jump, the soft ring returns to its original shape and automatically starts the process again. So as long as the infrared light is present, the jumping cycle can continue.
Even more interesting, changing the V-angle can make it crawl, jump forward, or leap vertically.
