Against a snow covered mountainous landscape, a military operator fires an FGM 148 Javelin during a live fire exercise. The missile leaves the shoulder fired launcher before rapidly climbing above the valley on its way toward the distant target.
During launch, a small launch motor ejects the missile from the tube before the flight motor takes over at a safe distance from the operator. The Javelin can use a top attack flight profile that carries the missile upward before it descends toward the target.
The Javelin is a fire and forget guided weapon, meaning its imaging infrared seeker can track the designated target after launch without requiring the operator to continuously guide it. Its top attack capability is designed to approach armored vehicles from above, where protection is often lighter than on their frontal armor.
