21:34 i think you’re too strict on the womanhood of the lyrics, but from my pov you could absolutely relate to nothing new.

she’s vulnerable about someone new coming in and replacing you because people grew tired of you, you’re no longer interesting to them.
i’m not trying to say that you’d feel or go through it, but for example, another creator could come and “steal” (for a lack of a better word) your audience, not because they’re better but because they’re new, fresh and interesting. it’s about feeling that you’re deprecated.

My husband is slowly becoming a Swiftie, and has recently dove into Red. His favorite song on this album, next to ATW, is Nothing New. It is his top song of the year so far, and he listens to a lot of different artists. This album is so underrated IMO.

REALLY IMPORTANT!!! When you confirmed your RED (Taylor's Version) list had 32 songs, I didn't think the last two were the Message in a Bottle remix and the ATW10 short film XD. The two songs I was expecting at the end are Eyes Open (Taylor's Version) and Safe & Sound (Taylor's Version). They're not on the album because she re-recorded them 2 years after RED (TV) came out, so she couldn't add them to it anymore. Instead, she put them on a streaming-exclusive EP called The More RED (Taylor's Version) Chapter. So basically, they're RED (TV) songs that are re-recorded but aren't on the album

“How can a person know everything at 18 and nothing at 22?” has so many levels for me. Interestingly, Taylor is constantly ruminating on the disrespect a young person feels in being dismissed: “When you are young, they assume you know nothing” and “don’t call me kid, don’t call me baby.” On the one hand, I feel like every adult has that strange question float through their head at some moment in their maturing (like: wow, the older I get, the less certain I am about almost ANYTHING). But on another level, being 18 and being told how amazing and brilliant you are (Olivia Rodrigo asks in “Teenage Dream”, “When will I stop being good for my age, and just start being good?” Bo Burnham says in “30,” “I used to be the young one, got used to meeting people Who weren't used to meeting someone who was born in 1990…now I’m turning 30.”) Taylor herself talks about being “a precocious child”. Any precocious child (especially girls) can tell you there is a fear of someday not being “ahead”. Like, no one thinks a 36 year old is precocious. Will people still value what she is when it’s not “novel”? It’s worry about aging out of being wanted, but also worry that what MADE you special was being talented AND young simultaneously. Anyway, I relate so much to this song.

Nothing New is my very favorite vault track, maybe of all time. I think if you listen to mirrorball and Clara Bow again after this one, it will hit even harder. Taylor gave Better Man to Little Big Town to record first. LBT is very much a country band, but I could always hear Taylor singing the words when I’d hear LBT, so I was glad she recorded it herself. Babe was also gifted to and recorded by Sugarland (also country) first, then Taylor recorded it herself.

couple thoughts:  Nothin' New:  not just performing /music artists.  Anxiety is also the reality for a lot of women that get dumped years in, replaced with a "trophy wife."    Message in a Bottle:  don't forget Taylor believes in fate (invisible string) --- and in interviews she says she writes all the things she can't say to someone directly in her songs.  The song itself is a Message;  the album is the bottle.  So, everybody is actually going to get to hear it.    And it's a Vault track, so I wonder if she just changed her mind in 2012 about sending it out.  Or maybe she didn't write it until she was touring Red?  Seems she was excited about a kid from London . . . . .  and maybe decided to try to keep it to herself?  It almost sounds more like the next era . . . .

Red is full of masterpieces, but "Nothing New" is my absolute favorite. So honest and deep. She talks about these themes a lot in her documentary. I really like your take on it as well.

Better Man is one of my very favorite Taylor Swift songs. It’s crazy to me that she left this off the original Red album and gave it to the band Little Big Town. Their version of the song won a bunch of country music awards. I like Little Big Town’s version, but I love Taylor’s vocals here. There’s an ache in her voice that just gets me every time. Also, happy Taylor Independence Day! I can’t believe we have the original reputation with no guilt!
