I've been seeing a lot of videos trying to demystify 4chan lately and I'm glad. I grew up watching internet historian's videos where he portrayed 4chan as a bunch of bad boy pranksters who piss people off for shits & giggles and its nice seeing the other side of these "4chan raids a poll and sends celebrities into a frenzy!" stories. Most of these polls either went nowhere or were actually pretty beneficial.

I find 4channers endearing in the same way as tf2 mercenaries. Unless something real happens of course, which it doesn’t 95% of the time either the whole thing is fake, or it makes no impact. Some are like soldier, major brain damage, some are like pyro, insane in a cute way outside of burning things etc. These stories are the ones we talk about, and even they failed to do anything, stopped by basic anti-tampering efforts.

In 2012 I attended the Red Tour at Gillette Stadium bc my friend’s mom got free tickets from the school she worked at, Horace Mann School for the Deaf. Me, my friend, and a handful of deaf students went to the show and had a great time. A: At least a portion of the students would’ve been genuinely excited to get a performance, despite the original intentions
and
B: I have a hunch (feel free to correct me) that a performance from such a viral artist would practically never happen for that school otherwise. After all, it seems that quite a lot of people assume that the DHH community wouldn’t enjoy live music (when in fact, it’s quite the opposite for many).

i did not go to harvey mudd (the school that ended up winning the chegg/papa john’s contest) but i did go to one of the sister colleges in the same consortium. the “taylor swift performed at the claremont colleges” story is mythical even today, but i never even knew that 4chan was connected to it at all until now. the reason it was so legendary to us is that harvey mudd, which is TINY in comparison to lots of the other schools in the running (less than 1,000 undergrads) is seriously prestigious nationwide for engineering and computer science and the students are known for pulling off insane shit in their free time. if we ever knew how they did it that knowledge was lost by my time, but it was always assumed that they won the contest through some genre of fuckery. i would bet real money that 1) there was some significant crossover between 4chan users and harvey mudd students and that 2) they were the kind of kids to go “wouldn’t it be funny if we beat 4chan” and commit 1000% to pulling it off
