I think it is near impossible to try to change to an insanity plea so many years after a conviction. To make it work it would have to be well documented that they were having delusions to the point that they didn’t know what was happening at the time of the crime. In the Lindsey Clancy case she was observed having symptoms of psychosis. Not understanding what you are doing is a key point for an insanity plea. It doesn’t appear there was evidence at the time of the murder that Pike was having psychosis or any sorts of delusions. My understanding is there has to be some reason the killer might not believe they are actually harming the victim in real life. Believing you are in a dream or that you are doing some other action would be an example. Another example would be if you do not have the mental capacity to understand death (most young kids fall into this category). The best example off the cuff would be Lenny from Of Mice and Men. He fundamentally did not understand death and that he was killing.
For the record the majority of the people who satisfy the high standard of not understand death or that what they were doing would harm an individual still are not “let off the hook”. The vast majority of them are in mental hospitals for the rest of their life. The exception to those cases are typically young children or those with a medical issue that can be completely cured that caused the mental health issue (like a brain tumor) and even then those cases are rare. So Lenny wouldn’t “get away with murder” he would be charged with involuntary manslaughter and institutionalized for the rest of his life because he didn’t mean to kill but his inability to understand death makes him dangerous to normal society.
All this today say that unless there is a huge smoking gun (mentally) in Pike’s case she likely would still be found competent if tried today. She may not have had the death penalty given simply because it is given less these days and satanic panic is less of a thing (though sadly still around) but that isn’t enough to overturn a sentence.

That being said, I think she's being more cautious currently, due in part to threats to herself and her family. I think the fact that she's taking a step back from being as outspoken as she was a few years ago makes sense in this context. I don't believe in capital punishment. I believe there is no such thing as a humane execution, and the more I've learned about lethal injection, the more I would probably prefer a guillotine or firing squad over it. I don't think it amounts to much justice, and it's closer to vengeance, and I don't believe the mother of the victim will feel any bit better after witnessing the murderer's execution. I would be surprised it that brought her lasting peace. Capital punishment also doesn't deter crime. That's well researched at this point, and these trials and a death row sentence tends to be way more tax-costly than normal murder trials where the guilty is sentenced to life imprisonment without the possibility of parole. I also don't think the state should be able to execute people in principle.
None of this I say out of consideration for the murderer's life. I only argue it from the perspective of societal utility.

I think what also magnifies Taylor Swift's apolitical stance is the death of Dolly Parton who Taylor wants to be seen in the same way. While Dolly also stayed out of politics by never really vocalizing who she was voting for or backing a certain candidate, she did voice her politics through her actions of standing and supporting LGBTQ+ community whether it was popular or not, regularly tried to support her community and spent a lot of her time and money on trying to help kids read and giving out millions of books for children. Dolly could've easily been a billionaire but she used her resources to help others first and foremost. My thoughts in the death penalty is this. Will this person ever be able to rejoin society without constant monitoring and medication? If the answer is no, and the crime is one of the unforgiving crimes like murder. Then the answer should be the death penalty... assuming there are no questions about the accuracy of the judgment.
At the end of the day , murder is part of the most basic portions of the social contract. We just don't kill people... Yes, self-defense is permissible.Sometimes accidents happen... I firmly believe that death is a release from pain, so I don't see the death penalty as a punishment but the decades of waiting is. I also think the process should be as long as possible to ensure no one is ever killed without being 100% guilty.
I still think permnanent imprisonment is a far worse punishment than being murdered by the state, yet it's very hard for me to feel much empathy for murderers regardless of gender. I’ve loved Taylor’s music for so long, and it does feel shallow when she only attempts to be political about particular issues long after the public already agrees with her. Being pro-queer rights in 2019 is not meaningfully challenging power. Now more than ever, we need people with big power and big money to stand up for the little guys, and she’s unwilling to do that. Her music quality is going down, and I am incredibly disappointed, because if your character is going to be suspect, the music has to be good. Similar to football where many personal issues with players can be overlooked if they play well, the same is true for musicians. My hope is that this is a temporary thing and that she use her power with conviction for good causes in the future. I just hate to see this regression. A lot of people hate to see it. I find it very that unsettling that people are not saying celebrities should voice their opinion but in fact they're just demanding you say the specific lines. That is not political freedom. You are demanding that they say something. You're not saying " voice your opinion" what you're saying is "say the line"

People are allowed to be apolitical that goes for artists as well. And in fact I would go as far as saying just because a celebrity has a platform does not mean they should be voicing opinions on every matter especially when they can be misinformed or uninformed

I don’t understand how murderers can just say I’m sick and get off. Pike, Clancy…they knew the difference between right and wrong and killing people, um, WAY wrong. Punishment needs to be given out. It’s so easy for them to get the hint to cop mentally unstable from other people in jail. Ever watch tv? They show that stuff all the time. Killing people, definitely wrong and you do the crime, you do the time.

Taylor is fine, for we, her fans, understand her position and respect her choices as she respects ours. This is a non issue. She also speaks with her actions more than her words. She’s an artist not a politician and yet she has at times let it be known clearly where she stands on important issues, including very publicly on stage, in awards shows and at the end of some of her videos. Yeah no, neither of these things are problems Taylor has. Ridiculous.

The entire system is fucked up. A woman spent 30 years in a box, now they've botched her execution which was described as "torturous". She's still alive.

I would NEVER in a million years think of murdering someone. I dont care what mental illness you have. We cannot allow people to escape justice. The mother deserves justice.
This isnt like the case of a girl killing her pimp. The girl posed 0 threat and was seemingly an upstanding person.
This all goes my feeling that clancy needs to be punished. We already have murderers saying they feel a kinship with her. We have copycats that use her exact phrasing after murdering their own children. Im sorry but i would rather have maximum punishment to dissaude future actions by other bad actors. I have seen too much discourse around this that seems insane like blaming the husband. She needs to be punished. Im okay with not using the death penalty in most situations as well
